Keyword homesteading, local food movement, voluntary simplicity, and community based agriculture. These circles of people practice a lot of that stuff. I find this stuff fascinating myself...the cow farmer pastures his cows on the fallow land of the wheat farmer, sells the tomato and herb farmer his cow's poop, makes cheese. Then they all sell their ingredients to the local restauranteur whose chef feeds the community a healthy, tasty, seasonal, and locally produced pizza for a very good price. It is happening more and more. There is very little transit, and a very tight circle of people involved.

I also like Good Guide. http://www.goodguide.com/ It is a growing database of commercially made food, toiletry, and cleaning products based on their ingredients, and the company who makes them. They explore three main categories...with multiple criteria for each and then rate the products and companies.

How safe/healthy is the item based on its ingredients? (solvents, carcinogens, etc)

How eco-friendly is the item and the company? (recycling, water usage, carbon footprint)

How socially ethical is the company? (diversity issues, human rights, fair trade, animal testing)

This might not be exactly what you are looking for but what I like about it, is that it helps us shop conscientiously even in the everyday grocery store or dollar store. It helps everyone do their little part, even if we aren't all homesteading and making our own stuff.

My fav product in this whole deal is Dr. Bronner soap. It can replace a hundred other products, it is vegan and organic and cruelty free. It is completely an ethically made product.

I don't know if I helped you at all...kinda danced around your question. But valuable info I think and maybe will interest you.

Yes, vegweb.com is a vegan recipe website and it also has a "non food" category for household products and possibly remedies, I haven't looked into it much.

I have also found a lot of good ideas on care2.com: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/ Click on the Green 101 category on the left or Food & Recipes > Vegan.

Never seen a bird take bits of a tree and put it into its wings? like that. Nice video. I don't think anyone knows why dippers "dip" up and down (bob up and down with their legs).
